Modern Greek Writing

David Ricks (ed.)

‘Superbly edited . . . Ricks has chosen poets, poems and translators with scrupulous and judicious care’-Times Literary Supplement

The aim of this anthology has been to provide the first representative selection of the best Greek verse and prose from Greece’s independence in 1821 to the end of the twentieth century.

Over fifty writers appear in the book in a selection from previously published translations including such world-famous poets as Cavafy, Seferis, Ritsos and Elytis, some of whom demonstrate Greece’s striking contribution in the areas of Surrealism and political verse. In the field of prose, a rich but neglected tradition is represented, including genres ranging from memoir, the historical novel, the short story, war literature and literary and experimental writing, with authors as diverse as Kazantzakis, Makriyannis, Royidis, Papadiamantis, Taktis and Galanki. Notes by the editor on each writer introduce the reader to a distinctive body of work, much of which has never before appeared in book form.

An invaluable companion to Roderick Beaton’s An Introduction to Greek Literature, this anthology will provide the first authoritative and accessible introduction to a modern literature of distinction which is finding more and more readers in the English-speaking world.

DAVID RICKS teaches Modern Greek Literature at King’s College, London. He is the author of The Shade of Homer and Byzantine Heroic Poetry.
