On BBC Radio 3 Michael Sherborne – author of the acclaimed biography H.G. Wells: Another Kind of Life – discusses Wells’s extraordinary contribution to the development of atomic weapons.
Wells coined the the term “atomic bombs” and imagined exploding atomic grenades in his 1914 novel The World Set Free. With presenter Samira Ahmed, Michael Sherborne and other guests discuss how the idea became reality. The programme anticipates the 70th anniversary of the first nuclear weapons test which took place at Alamogordo, New Mexico, on 16 July, 1945 as part of the Manhattan Project. With the detonation, the world entered the Atomic Age.
