grouchoI can’t help but peck The Man Who Planted Trees. This classic eco-parable from Jean Giono about an old man who single-handedly plants a whole forest of trees brought a tear to my eye thinking about all those lovely branches. Maybe if more people read it the idea wouldn’t be such a flight of fancy.


doris-transparentThings can be quite drab as an African Grey. Which is why this week I’ve pecked Dom Casmurro by Machado de Assis. Set in colourful Brazil, it tells the story of a love affair that falls to pieces because of the narrator’s jealousy. But more than this, just look at those feathers on the cover . . .
