born-gayDr Qazi Rahman, an academic at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, studies the biology of sexual orientation and the implications for mental health. Several articles in The Guardian in recent times have promoted the idea that sexual orientation is fundamentally a choice. Dr Rahman argues that this is not so and that scientific research has demonstrated this. Furthermore, he argues that the idea that orientation is a choice plays into the hands of homophobes and conservatives who force LGBT people into psychologically damaging pseudo-treatments.
