JAAN KAPLINSKI is the most significant, highest acclaimed and most translated writer to come out of Estonia. He was born in Tartu, to an Estonian mother and a Polish father who vanished in the Gulag archipelago during the war.
Kaplinski studied linguistics at Tartu University, and has since worked as a researcher, lecturer, translator, journalist and politician. Known for his sensitive, humanist style, he has published several books of verse, children's literature, essays and novels in Estonian, Finnish and English. His works have been translated into several languages.
