VERNON LEE (1856–1935) was a British writer, essayist and critic. Born Violet Paget in France to British expatriate parents, she spent the majority of her writing career on the continent labouring under a pseudonym. She was a respected art critic, before branching out into sociology and fiction, the latter characterized by supernatural themes. Among her many contemporary admirers were Browning, Walter Pater, Shaw, Whistler and Edith Wharton. She died in 1935.
