James Purdy

JAMES OTIS PURDY (1914–2009) was a controversial American novelist, short-story writer, poet, and playwright who published over a dozen novels and many collections of poetry, short stories, and plays. His work has been translated into more than 30 languages.

Refusing to bow his style and themes to commercial success, Purdy's work was highly original and cutting edge, and the positive critical response to his body of work was much delayed. It was not until the end of the last century that a reappraisal began in earnest, led by the likes of Gore Vidal and Jonathan Franzen.
