JOHANNA SINISALO is a Finnish science fiction and fantasy writer. She was born in Lapland and studied comparative literature and drama at the University of Tampere, Finland. She then worked in advertising before breaking out as a writer.
An important figure in the Finnish science fiction scene in the late 1980s and early 90s, she won two consecutive Atorox Awards (science fiction awards) for short fiction in the genre.
She also won Finland's highest prize for literature, the Finlandia Prize, in 2000 for her first novel, Ennen päivänlaskua ei voi (translated as Not Before Sundown in 2003 and again as Troll — A Love Story in 2004 for the American market). The novels Birdbrain and The Blood of Angels followed to critical acclaim for their highly imaginative story-telling and human aspect.
