Allen Saddler

ALLEN SADDLER (1923–2011) left school at fourteen with no qualifications and educated himself in the public library. Before the war broke out in 1939, he took advantage of living in London by going to watch shows and plays.

Saddler was the author of four novels, nine children's books and eight plays. He was a theatre critic for the Independent, and from the 1970s onwards was a full-time writer at the paper. He also reviewed drama for the GuardianThe Stage and many theatre publications, and was a features contributor for numerous national papers. He wrote a sitcom for BBC2 and more than two dozen plays and monologues for BBC Radio Four.
