'It’s ambitious and provocative. Can it work? Certainly worth a serious try.' – Noam Chomsky

In the 21st century we are faced with an array of complex global challenges, from religious fanaticism, mass migration, unfettered corporate power, to inequality, Big Data and climate change.

In front of these global threats and tragedies is a common barrier to their solution — it is the spirit that has defined the age we live in: competition.

We can dismantle this barrier, but first we must radically change our thinking. Blending politics and psychology, the Simultaneous Policy Solution, the ‘SIMPOL Solution’, shows us why we must all come to terms with the crippling effect of global competition and how through simultaneous action — through cooperation — we can overcome the problems we face today and tomorrow. It doesn’t take masses of people to initiate lasting change — in fact, it never has. Key transitions in human history were initiated by small numbers of activists. The Simpol Solution arrives on the back of an international movement of activists, with support from British MPs, policy-makers and public figures.

'National competitiveness has become one of the central myths by which we are governed. It is, in essence, a wholly corrosive process that undermines the state’s capacity to raise taxes at the same time as it tells most of us that our labour should be valued less highly. Bunzl and Duffell perform the important public function of debunking this myth, but they also go much further than that. They provide an eye-catching blueprint for thinking a radically different world into being. Challenging conditions require expansive thinking, and this book delivers suitable ambition many times over in its efforts to move us beyond the neoliberal dystopia engendered by national competitiveness discourse. It deserves to be widely read and its central aims to be widely debated.' – Matthew Watson Professor of Political Economy, University of Warwick; UK Economic and Social Research Council Professorial Fellow
'I nodded until I got a crick in my neck. I haven’t read a book for years that I agreed with so deeply and so consistently – nor felt so keenly that these are messages the world needs to hear. The clarity, simplicity and profound importance of this book are beyond question. Please read it, and please encourage others to do the same.' – Prof. Simon Anholt Founder, the Good Country, the Good Country Index and the Global Vote
'Do you want to help make a better world, but feel powerless to do so? This extraordinary book lights the way forward.' – John Stewart, Evolution’s Arrow – The direction of evolution and the future of humanity
'The Simpol Solution takes a welcome fresh look at political/economic reality and clearly explains the psychology behind why we need new eyes to see how we might force politicians to change the world on our behalf.' – Joris Luyendijk, Swimming with Sharks
'A very fine book! Its discussion of the pros and cons of competition and the need to think beyond competition only is long overdue, as is the need to think about global governance and global citizenship. I perfectly agree with the book’s analysis and really enjoyed reading it. The combination of different disciplines was especially welcome and informative.' – Cornelia C. Beyer, Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Hull

'The Simpol Solution is an encouraging first step, truly workable and pragmatic, toward a world governance platform. This is the best thing we have, at this time, for anything resembling a genuine and functional world governing system.' – Ken Wilber, The Integral Vision

JOHN BUNZL is the CEO of an international textile company, a writer and international campaigner. In 2000 he co-founded the International Simultaneous Policy Organization in order to help find cooperative solutions to global problems, and SIMPOL now has active campaigns in 10 countries and supporters in over 100.

NICK DUFFELL is a psychotherapist with wide experience as a facilitator in leadership development. He is the author of Sex, Love and the Dangers of Intimacy, Trauma, Abandonment and Privilege and Wounded Leaders: British Elitism and the Entitlement Illusion, all of which have received critical acclaim for their psychological study of history, culture and power.
