Uno Chiyo

Uno Chiyo was a Japanese writer and fashion designer, who had a significant influence on Japan's modern cultural landscape in the 20th century. She achieved early literary success and moved to Tokyo, leaving her husband in the process, to lead a glamorous bohemian life alongside other writers, artists and poets. She also founded the country's first fashion magazine, Style.

Her best-selling books explored romantic entanglements beyond the confines of conventional roles and relationships, and her huge popularity and influence was recognised formally in 1990 when she was awarded a title by the emperor and named 'a person of cultural merit.

'I never forced myself to do anything I didn't want to do. I've lived my life just the way I wanted to.'
